NMC Guidelines for MBBS Abroad

The National Medical Commission Act, 2019, an act of Parliament, established the NMC and came into effect on September 25, 2020, as announced in a gazette notification dated April 24, 2020. Following its formation under section 3A of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956, the Board of Governors in supersession of the Medical Council of India is disbanded. Mentioned below are the major NMC Guidelines for MBBS Abroad aspiring Indian students.

Duration of the MBBS Course

According to the National Medical Council (NMC), the MBBS program abroad must be at least 5.5 years in duration. This includes one year of mandatory clinical training or internship at a recognized hospital.

Clinical Internship

The NMC mandates a one-year (12-month) internship during the MBBS program. This must be completed at an authorized hospital, and students are required to maintain a detailed logbook to fulfil NMC requirements.

Curriculum

The MBBS curriculum abroad comprises Pre-Clinical, Para-Clinical, and Clinical phases, along with an internship. The language of instruction must be English. Students should ensure the university’s curriculum follows the NMC's 2021 guidelines and includes all 19 mandatory subjects.

NEET Requirement

NEET qualification is compulsory for Indian students aspiring to pursue MBBS abroad. It is required for admission into medical universities approved by the NMC and WHO, and for eligibility to practice medicine in India.

Eligibility Criteria

Students must have completed their 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology, achieving a minimum aggregate of:
General Category (UR): 50% OBC/SC/ST: 40% | PWD: 45% | The minimum age to appear for NEET 2024 and to apply for MBBS abroad is 17 years.

Recognition and Licensing

Medical universities must be accredited by the appropriate authority in their country. Graduates should be eligible to practice medicine locally or return to India and qualify through licensing exams such as the FMGE or NEXT, subject to applicable regulations.
